Apex Legends Season 5: No New Weapon, But a Bigger Surprise

Apex Legends Season 5 delivers thrilling PvE quests and Loba, but breaks tradition by skipping a new weapon for the first time.

Let me take you back to May 2020. I remember booting up Apex Legends with my squad, buzzing with excitement because Season 5 was just around the corner. We’d seen the teasers for Loba, heard whispers about a new PvE quest line, and were ready to dive into the Salvage zone. But then came the news that hit like a Mozambique shot: no new weapon. For the first time in the game's history, a season would launch without a fresh gun to master. Honestly? It felt like a gut punch at first.

Let’s rewind a bit. Before Season 5, every single season had brought something new to the arsenal. Season 1 gave us the Havoc, that energy rifle with a spin-up that could melt people if you controlled the recoil. Season 2 introduced the L-STAR, a beastly EMG that overheat mechanics made both thrilling and punishing. Season 3 dropped the Charge Rifle, which was basically a laser sniper that made people ragequit. And Season 4 added the Sentinel, a bolt-action sniper with that satisfying shield-breaking trick. So when Respawn confirmed Season 5 wouldn’t add a single new weapon, it broke a pretty solid tradition.

Now, here’s where things got spicy. The community had been buzzing for months about the Volt SMG from Titanfall 2. Dataminers had dug up what looked like epic skins for the weapon in the game files, and everyone just assumed it was destined for Season 5. I mean, the signs were everywhere. The Volt had been a fan favorite in Titanfall 2, known for its accuracy and energy-based punch. People on Reddit were already theorycrafting loadouts, and content creators were pre-making “PVE Build?” videos. So when Chad Armstrong, a designer at Respawn, flat-out said there would be no new weapon, the disappointment was real. It felt like the universe had cocked a Peacekeeper and deleted all our hopes.

But hold on. Let’s not throw the baby out with the lava. Even though we didn’t get a new boomstick, Season 5 delivered something arguably more meaningful: Loba, the PvE Season Quests, and a whole new map area. If you had to choose between another gun and a full-blown lore-driven quest system, which would you pick? For me, it’s actually a no-brainer now, but back then I was a little salty. Loba alone was a game-changer. Her tactical, Burglar’s Best Friend, let you teleport across gaps and rooftops, completely rewiring how you approached rotations. Her ultimate, Black Market Boutique, turned every enemy death box into a loot buffet. She wasn’t just a new legend; she changed team dynamics overnight.

Then there were the Season Quests — the Broken Ghost storyline. That was the first real PvE content in Apex Legends, and it shook things up considerably. Instead of just grinding matches for battle pass stars, you could dig into a narrative adventure alongside Gibraltar and LL. Each week unlocked a new chapter, taking you through the newly-added Salvage zone (which itself was a gorgeous Drexel-hammer-themed playground). You fought waves of prowlers, solved puzzles, and uncovered mysterious artifacts. It was a totally different vibe from battle royale, and honestly, it made me care about the world of the Outlands way more than any new SMG ever could.

Now, looking back from 2026, I can see that Season 5 was actually a turning point, and not just because it skipped a weapon. It proved Respawn was willing to bet on lore and innovation over pure mechanical additions. It also set a precedent: guns are cool, but they’re not the only reason we keep playing. In fact, the legendary Volt SMG finally did arrive... but not until Season 7, several seasons later. So all those dataminers weren’t wrong — they were just early. When it landed, it became an instant meta staple, and I still adore it today. But would I trade the Broken Ghost questline to have gotten it five months sooner? Absolutely not. Not even if the Volt could shoot literal fireballs.

Here’s the thing about Apex Legends that I’ve learned after all these years. The best moments don’t come from a new gun texture or a slight stat tweak. They come from those chaotic fights where Loba teleports behind an entire squad, opens her black market, and steals a Kraber right from under their noses. They come from huddled in a cave with your buddies, trying to solve that one cryptic clue in the PvE quest, while a prowler gnaws at your ankles. They come from exploring Salvage and discovering a hidden loot cache that’s guarded by three separate squads. Those are the memories that stick. And Season 5 gave us all of that, plus the most stylish legend to ever grace the roster.

So if you’re a new player who joined after Season 5, maybe you never experienced the “no new weapon” drama. But trust me, it was a big deal, and it taught me to trust the developers’ vision even when it doesn’t match my expectations. Sometimes “less” is actually “more,” especially when the “more” is a gripping story mode, a charismatic thief, and a map that feels alive with secrets.

Would I love to see a new weapon every season again? Sure, who wouldn’t? But I’d rather have another Broken Ghost-style saga any day. Respawn took a risk, and it paid off. Plus, let’s be honest, nobody wants to learn a new recoil pattern while trying to survive a prowler assault. Some things are sacred. 😉
